Another True Confession

You know how sometimes when you're at a store buying something and they ask you for your phone number? That's always bothered me.

So I decided to have some fun with it. Recently, when asked that question by some salesperson, I have given somebody else's phone number. A few weeks ago, I gave the work number of an editor of one of the publications I write for. Not long after that, I gave the phone number of an old boyfriend from junior high. (I have quite a knack for remembering phone numbers over long periods of time.) Just yesterday, at a great sale at Express, I gave the office number of our church.

I don't know what's worse -- the fact that I'm doing this, or the odd sense of satisfaction I get every time I do it.

Sometimes I give my number with the last digit changed, feeling secretly guilty for the poor schlep who has to argue with whoever calls that I do not, in fact, live there. I like your idea better! :-)

That has always bugged me, so I simply decline to do so with a little "No thanks." (After all, you are not required to discolse any such information to the store, nor is that information linked in any way to the ability of the sale to go through.)

I cannot begin to describe the immense smug satisfaction I feel as I imagine the sales clerk thinking, "Oh no! She's on to us! She has figured out our system. Curses on you, you smart, smart lady for your incredible deductive skills."

While a psychologist would probably say that reveals far more about my deperate need for approval and validation, it's still incredibly rewarding for my ego -- even if the compliments are all self-induced.

Found your blog through Elizabeth and had to comment on this one. I once gave my boss' phone number. My friend who was shopping with me and worked at the same place gave the name of another of our superiors. We didn't really care for either of them and we thought we were so sly--getting back at the store and our bosses! Ha!!

Next time you should give them a 555 number. Keep a completely straight face while doing it and see if they catch it. Or maybe just all 5s "(555) 555-5555" and say it slow like you're making sure s/he is keeping up.

I remember my aunt telling a story that she gave a false number to the sales girl and the girl looked at her strangely and said "That's MY phone number!" Wonder if that was really true...

I always say, when they ask me to give them my number, "I'd rather not." I've never had anyone press me, so far.
